Upgrading an existing X-ray system can be a sensible option when its key components are still functioning reliably and the mechanical system remains suitable for the range of examinations performed. If the need for modernization is primarily related to the detector, software, image processing, or IT integration, a targeted upgrade can be a practical alternative to replacing the entire X-ray system.

 

A new X-ray system should be considered when several key components of the existing system are technically outdated or when the current system no longer meets future requirements for examinations, positioning, workflow, and integration. Outdated mechanical components, an expanded range of examinations, or multiple components reaching the end of their service life may also indicate that replacing the entire system is the more appropriate solution.

 

Replacing an X-ray detector can be a sensible option when the existing detector technology no longer meets current requirements for image quality, workflow efficiency, durability, or ease of use. When selecting a new detector, key factors to consider include detector size, active imaging area, DQE, spatial resolution, weight, wireless workflow, battery concept, compatibility, and image transmission.

No. A modern X-ray detector does not automatically result in lower radiation exposure. Radiation dose depends on the interaction of several factors, with detector performance being only one part of the equation. Other factors include X-ray exposure parameters, examination protocols, patient body habitus, positioning, collimation, automatic exposure control, and image processing. However, a modern detector can make an important contribution to dose optimization. The goal of dose optimization is to achieve an appropriate level of radiation exposure while maintaining sufficient diagnostic image quality.
